- Avoid High Speeds - As your speed increases, your aerodynamic drag increases. Driveing 62 mph vs 75 mph can save you up to 15%
- Do not Accelerate or Brake Hard - This can save you up to 20%
- Keep Tires Properly Inflated - A single tire under inflated by 2 PSI, increases fuel consumption by 1%
- Use Air Conditioning Sparingly - This puts an extra load on your engine and thus will reduce your mpg about 20%. Remember that when you are using the defrost, this is using your air conditioner.
- Keep Windows Closed - Especially at high speeds this can reduce economy by 10%
- Service Vehicle Regularly - Dirty air filters, old spark plugs or low fluid levels will cause poor fuel economy.
- Use Cruise Control - Constant speeds save gas.
- Avoid Heavy Loads - Take those heavy items out your vehicle. Pack light for trips.
- Avoid Long Idles - Restarting the vehicle consumes less fuel than if you idle it for long periods.
- Purchase a Fuel Efficient Vehicle - If you are in the market for a new vehicle, be sure to check out the fuel consumption rating. When possible, manual transmissions are great for fuel economy.
